A comprehensive SEO site audit is important in identifying issue a website owner couldn’t identify on their own. Over the last years, I’ve found many common issues that seem to repeat themselves across many websites. I’ve also seen many anomalies that can be hard to find without years of experience.

My SEO audit service is geared towards the combination of common and not so common issues. The larger a site is the more frequently it should have an audit conducted. If you wait for an issues to arise it could take weeks to identify the issues. It’s always best to be proactive.

Content Audit

The content portion looks at several components that address issues your content is having in relation to what Google expects. Some of what I look for is.

CRAWL ISSUES
 
I look at issues that impact Google’s ability to crawl your site. This can impact rankings and is crucial for sites that have gone through a recent redesign.  This section address…

  • Check for server errors
  • Use of javascript in navigation
  • Important pages that are now broken
  • Verify 404 pages 
SITEMAP AUDIT AND REVIEW
 
Sitemaps are important because they help Google find more of your content. However, if you have errors in your sitemaps Google may choose to ignore that sitemap. This portion of the SEO site audit address those issues.
  • Check that an xml site exists
  • Check for speciality sign maps
  • Verify sitemap is clear of errors
  • Check from broken pages in sitemap
  • Check for re-directed pages in sitemap

ROBOTS.TXT REVIEW This file is the first file search engines crawl. If it is set up imporely it can cause your site traffic to come to a screeching halt. A misconfigured file and cause sections of the site to become invisible to Google and/or sections of the site you want hidden to become public. Verify file is live Verify sitemap is present Verify pages that are being blocked are correct Check if pages that are being blocked via robots.txt verify that that is the right course of action
SITE CANONALIZATION
 
This is a common technical problem that can cause major problems within Google. If you’re pages say one thing and your tags say something else, it could cause ranking issues.
  • Ensure home page is canonicalized properly
  • Verify http://, www and https versions resolve correctly
  • Verify trailing slashed don’t create duplicate content issues
  • Other issues concerning urls resolving properly based on different criteria
SITE ARCHITECTURE
 
The site architecture is important because this is how Google will crawl your site. If you make it too difficult for Google to crawl the site you may miss out on a lot of organic traffic. Some of what I’ll look at is:
  • Issues with the site structure
  • Breadcrumb set-up and organization
  • Review infinite scroll pages (if present)
  • Review broken links in the navigation and across the site
